Pietersite is a chalcedony with embedded fibers of amphibole minerals with varying degrees of alteration. Pietersite is sought after for gemstone collections and jewelry not for industrial use. A member of the quartz family of gemstones pietersite is a pseudomorph of quartz.

The gold tinges of the stone are perfect contrasts to its usual brown grey and blue black colors. Its dominant gold hues are contrasted with deep blue black grey and brown as well as occasional clear areas. A pseudomorph is one mineral that changes into another. Pietersite is a member of the quartz family. Pietersite is a variety of quartz composed naturally of tiger s eye hawk s eye and jasper and is characterized by an incredible chatoyancy and brilliance of life within the stone.

Pietersite is a pseudomorph of quartz which means that it started its life as another mineral crocidolite but over time quartz replaced the crocidolite fibres. It was named after his father louis pieters. Pietersite may be shaped into beads but it is rarely faceted since its surface is opaque. Pietersite colours include blue rusty red gold and brown. Pietersite was discovered by sid pieters in 1962 in namibia and named in his honour.

Crocidolite is one of several minerals which belong to the riebeckite family of amphibole silicates the quartz family includes many gemstones including many popular gems as well as some lesser known quartz varieties too.
